This is an old standard in woodworking. Actually,
this was one of my college textbooks! Although
the illustrations are dated, and the technology is
too, the information is just unbeatable.
The book is full of jigs and fixtures you can make
yourself. If you are serious about becoming a
furniture maker, or cabientmaker, then you need
a copy of this book on your shelf.
This is another of my old college days textbooks.
Joyce is an English woodworking and furniture making
master. The language is a bit stilted, and the terms are
sometimes unusual (clamps are 'cramps' for example)
but the techniques are there. The illustrations are very
helpful.
This is another standard you should have on your shelf if
you are an aspiring fine woodworker, cabinetmaker or
furniture maker.
Coach painting, or carriage painting, leads both
furniture finishers and auto finishers. Carriages
were primarily wooden, of course. Hence, many
of the finishing techniques of the carriage
finishers apply to fine furniture. Like their cousins,
automobiles, carriages were more valuable and
prized when their finishes were perfect. I
suppose we've always liked to show off our
wheels!
If you're interested in painted perfect finishes for
pianos or anything else, study carriage or coach
finishing.
David Square's book, The Veneering Book, is
one of the best books on current veneering
equipment, supplies and practices I've found. It
includes valuable informationon vacuum veneer
pressing, including some 'make-your-own' bags
and equipment ideas.
