Testing Wood Finishes for Protective Performance Characteristics

If you've been curious as to all the claims about which finish is more durable than the others, or which finish might be best for your projects, then this booklet might be just for you.

Tim Inman first developed this program and wrote these materials for the Wood Finishing students at Dakota County Technical College near Minneapolis, in 1988. It came about because the students needed an objective testing sequence they could use and understand without a huge investment in technical equipment they might use infrequently. The tests are simple to do, quick and reliable. They are based on ASTM standard tests, but developed for shop-made testing using 'on-hands' tools and materials.

Tim originally published this material for the woodworking public in
Fine Woodworking Magazine. It is also included in the Fine Woodworking Finishing Book. The original tests were edited for marketing and space reasons by the publishers of Fine Woodworking. Now, you can have the actual booklet and tests he provided for the students at Dakota County Technical College - unedited, and unabridged. Apx 20 pages. .PDF on CD
